Understanding the Condition
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel connecting the inside of the anal canal to the skin near the anus. It typically develops after an anal abscess — when the abscess bursts or is surgically drained, a persistent tract can remain. It causes chronic, intermittent discharge, pain, and repeated abscess formation.
Fistulas are classified by their relationship to the anal sphincter muscles (intersphincteric, transsphincteric, suprasphincteric, extrasphincteric). This classification determines the surgical technique required — particularly whether sphincter-preservation techniques like VAAFT or LIFT are needed.

Step by Step
Share symptoms with Care Partner. Proctologist consultation arranged at a private, accredited hospital in Vadodara for examination and assessment.
MRI scan accurately maps the fistula tract — internal opening, external opening, extensions, and proximity to sphincter — to plan the correct surgical approach.
Surgical plan confirmed. Pre-authorisation for day-care or 1-day admission processed by Care Partner. All paperwork handled.
Low fistulas: fistulotomy (laying open) or fistulectomy. High/complex fistulas: VAAFT (video-assisted endoscopic closure) or LIFT procedure — preserves sphincter function completely.
Open wounds heal by secondary intention with regular dressing. Care Partner coordinates wound care nurse visits if needed. Follow-up at Week 2, Week 4, and Week 8.
