Understanding the Condition
Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) form when minerals and salts crystallise inside the kidneys. Stones smaller than 5mm often pass naturally; larger stones cause severe colicky pain, blood in urine, and urinary obstruction requiring medical intervention.
Modern urological surgery uses laser energy (Holmium YAG or Thulium fibre laser) to fragment stones into dust, which is then flushed or removed through a scope — no external cuts required for most procedures. Treatment is matched to stone size, location, and composition.

Step by Step
Share your ultrasound or CT-KUB report. Care Partner arranges urology consultation to evaluate stone size, position, and hardness.
Urologist recommends RIRS (flexible scope), URSL (rigid scope), or PCNL (percutaneous) based on stone characteristics. Smaller stones may pass with medication.
Pre-authorisation processed. Pre-operative blood and urine tests coordinated. Admission scheduled at your preferred hospital.
Minimally invasive endoscopic approach under spinal or general anaesthesia. Stone fragmented by laser and removed. No external cuts for RIRS/URSL.
A ureteric stent (DJ stent) is placed for 1–4 weeks post-procedure and removed as an outpatient. Care Partner follows up on Day 3, Day 10, and at stent removal.
What to Expect
Day 1–2
IV fluids, antibiotics, and pain relief. Most patients are discharged 24–48 hours post-procedure.
Week 1
Mild discomfort from DJ stent — normal. Increase fluid intake. Light activity encouraged. Care Partner calls on Day 3.
Week 2–3
DJ stent removed as 5-minute outpatient procedure. Normal activity resumes after removal.
Month 1–3
Stone analysis results guide dietary changes. Follow-up ultrasound confirms stone-free status.
